Corrections.
When we publish a wrong number we say so here, in public, with a date. This log is append-only: nothing gets quietly removed once it is on the page.
The policy
An error involving a number almost always merits a correction rather than a silent edit. When we correct one, three things happen: the article carries a dated correction notice, the entry below is added, and the correction is pushed to every other place the figure appeared, including any ranking table built on it, the newsletter, and anything embedded off-site. Federal statistical practice requires corrections in all product formats and we hold to the same standard.
We use the word “corrected”. Not recast, not clarified, not updated. Softening the language costs more trust than the original error did.

We would rather say that plainly than present an empty page as an achievement. An empty log on a young site means very little; what matters is that this page exists before we need it, so there is no decision to make about whether to admit an error later.
